When Hemingway picked Cooper and Bergman for this 1943 film, he couldn’t have done better. They’re dazzling to contemplate at, and the chemistry between them is palpable. The dialogue has retained the style of the book, and they fabricate it so natural, which is not an easy feat. Station in 1937 Spain, this Civil War memoir is an action packed adventure, but above all, it’s a appreciate memoir.

Terrific cinematography by Ray Rennahan, a suited atmospheric gain by Victor Young, and a slew of tantalizing character actors (Katina Paxinou won the Oscar for best supporting actress) benefit the delicate leads.

Cooper is not only beautiful, but gives a subtle, fine performance, and Bergaman, looking younger than her 29 years with her short, curly hair, is shining…I adore the scene where she gets her first kiss, and says “I always wondered where the noses went”.

Directed by Sam Wood, who a year earlier had directed one of Cooper’s most celebrated films, “The Pride of the Yankees” (and in ‘45, was to team again with Cooper and Bergman in “Saratoga Trunk”), did a incredible job with Hemingway’s unique…it stands up to many viewings, and is a must for Cooper and Bergman fans.

No doubt about it! This DVD deserves a perfect 5 (this is the second that I give after ROBOCOP director’s lop) . 130 minutes of absolute pleasure with actors who were genuine stars : Ingrid Bergman and Gary Cooper. The colors are unbelievable, the scenery good and the musical secure terrific. But I hear someone out there complaining : Gosh! It’s a 1943 movie, an antiquity. Don’t be disquieted, you will not be disappointed. There are also in this movie explosions, gunfires and even torrid like scenes. Objective perceive how Ingrid Bergman plays with her hair in order to seduce Gary and you will forget all the real miniature starlets. This record of a three-days fancy affair during the spain civil war is about idealism, self-sacrifice and hope. Themes that , I agree, are not specially “in” in 1998 but were developed by Ernest Hemingway, one of the best american writers. A healthy DVD in order to spruce our eyes and ears.

I have one word to record this movie. That word is “unpleasant.”

This is an almost unbearable drama about a college student transported via a time disappear headband in an arcade to the days of Oliver Cromwell’s England. I watched it because it sounded droll, but the reality is that it smells like a wet dog. The three main place points are essentially time fade, Cromwell’s England, and animal husbandry (of sorts.) The student is played by the fetid Shannon Dow Smith (yes, he’s the hero) who teaches the ladies of Dorset to hurry a castle plump of illicit trade amongst the Puritans. Needless to say there are terrible costumes, really dreadful English accents (The movie was filmed in Romania, and most of the smaller parts were played by Romanians who learned their lines phonetically!), and incredibly moronic station twists.

Technically the movie is quite abominable. Lots of camera jitter can be seen on occasion. At least once the sound and film were not in sync, resulting in people speaking with no words being heard. My biggest overall complaints, though, were the music and the editing. The editing was so choppy, that it was actually offensive to watch; frequently scenes were stuck in where they made absolutely no sense, and only abet to confuse the already muddled station. The music is “detached jazz” type piano music that is about 100 decibels louder than the rest of the soundtrack, so have your thumb on the volume control on the remote. As a final affront to the audience, the cast is listed in the credits, but the character names are not, meaning you have no clue who was who, except in the extremely unlikely event that you had heard of any of these actors before.

There are very few highlights to discuss. They are Betsy Lynn George and the girl who played the waitress reach the college in the frame shots. Betsy Lynn George is sparkling, and is probably the only actress in the film with genuine thespian talent. She is better known for her friendly starring role in “Petticoat Planet” which I recommend only in preference to this film (marginally) . I am unsure who the waitress is (thanks to the credits) but have it is Christi Harris, although I am not definite of that. Whoever she is, she is also decent in her role and is very fine. Beyond this minor praise, the rest of the film is a mess.

I can’t imagine any reason I would ever look this again unless threatened with coarse bodily afflict. Shame on you David LeCoteau for directing this fraction of drek (under pseudonym “Ellen Cabot”), and shame on you Vlad and Oana Paunescu for producing something so artistically and morally bankrupt.

Maybe I don’t understand the definition of “lurid.” From my perspective, I believe this film would have been more aptly entitled, “Warm and Cozy Castle Tales.” If you want hot busty babes, hot sex, hot raunch, and lots of nudity, this film is probably not for you.

This is a very nice DVD containing the first 5 episodes of the 10 episode Dirty Pair OAV series. Not to be confused with any of the movies/OAV’s previously released by Streamline. The episodes peep similar to the TV series in their designs and animation. The pair tackle five more assignments of galactic significance with their usual carefree manner and disregard for property. Distinguished of the fun is in the pair’s rocky friendship. The DVD is well done in several regards. The liberties taken with the dub seem largely to add to the charm of the note or at least not detract from it. My mountainous complaint with the dub is the infamous language which, though I don’t dislike of itself, is a diminutive overused. The subtitle is more literal and feels competent. Each episode is selectable directly from the main menu and starts from a preview of the episode, which is very convenient when you impartial want to know which one it is. You can consume Japanese, English, or English with Op/End Lyrics which is also a nice feature. Credits appear before and after every episode and the lyrics alternate between translated and romanji. Bonus material includes a text-less opening animation but no closing. The recount looked like it was taken from a quality master. The sound I can’t really comment on but it looks like Dolby Digital 2-channel for both English and Japanese and sounded sure to me. The only thing I could contemplate to add might be a gallery of some kind, or some liner notes. This was intended for VHS or LaserDisk viewing and made during the 80’s, it’s no Mononoke Hime. Taking this into consideration I contemplate this is a vast DVD that is worth the money. I give it four stars. I only hope ADV can release the TV series in a similar fashion. Please.

I’ll find to the point. This DVD is about a pair of interplanetary police agency, or something like that, that do their police work while wearing bikinis. In the four episodes they: put a prison warden, demolish a berserk robot, disarm a bunch of unfavorable brats, and shut down a casino. Since this is weak school anime, the graphics are not the best but OK, plots are adequate for 25-minute episodes. No explicit violence or nudity, so it’s OK for kids. I would have given a 3-star rating if it wasn’t for the jokes that the girls crack about each other constantly. Did I mention that they mostly wear bikinis!

I grew up with Michael Jackson and lived through all the awful press, well this video has two psychologist picking Michael Jackson apart, bit by bit, fragment by fragment on his addictions, and plastic surgeries ect.. For me a right anecdote would be telling Michael Jackson contribution for all humanity and let the past be in the past, in other words let a lying dog lie. I am sick of hearing about the 1993 charges, and the changing of his skin, who cares, the point is Michael had the factual spirit of giving, he was an inspirtation to us all, and in his death he does not deserve to be picked apart and effect under a microscope. The only agreeable piece to this video is it shows michael meeting princess diana, and some of his interviews. As I die hard fan I am boycotting any more poor press on behalf of a immense yarn. Don’t lift this video.

“Hard-hitting film of how a celebrity lifestyle conspired to kill Michael Jackson? ” The media and spurious allegations of child abuse was the only thing that conspired to slay the greatest entertainer who ever lived. The only “inner demon” Michael had was the desire to flee public judgement, media sensationalism and the parasites that ragged him as an ATM machine. His only desire was to be loved by the world. Shame on this studio release…bone pickers to the raze.

THIS ISLAND EARTH is a 1950s science-fiction pulp magazine shroud brought to life: clunky spacecraft, battling planets, wicked aliens, and screaming heroines in wound. The special effects are 1955 state-of-the-art, and they serene enjoy up very well today, for unlike ultra-realistic computer generated graphics they have a fantasy feel that is very, very entertaining–a sort of “Wizard of Oz goes sci-fi” study that is very inspiring to the gawk.

As already illustrious, the anecdote concerns several of earth’s best minds who are kidnapped by aliens and ordered to invent an endless source of energy for a dying planet. The script is laced with 1950s sexism–one line, for example, is “Don’t snort me that as woman you’re not inviting? “–but this is actually less offensive than it is rather funny, in keeping with the magazine veil sensibility that pervades the fragment. The cast plays with spacious sincerity: Rex Reason is appropriately dauntless, Faith Domergue screams the house down, and the aliens all have high foreheads–excepting, of course, that really contemptible looking one with claws for hands!

Some humorless-type science-fiction fans won’t be pleased it, and if you’re not the type to glean a kick from period visuals you might want to give this one miss. But for pure 1950s matinee fun, you can’t do better than THIS ISLAND EARTH.

Here’s an lively bit of trivia (okay, maybe not so considerable challenging, but worth noting, at least) …seems the film This Island Earth (1955) was one of the first major science fiction features filmed in Technicolor, a process that actually had been around, in various states, since the early twentieth century. Directed by Joseph M. Newman (The Gunfight at Dodge City, Tarzan, the Ape Man), the film stars Rex Reason (The Creature Walks Among Us), Faith Domergue (It Came from Beneath the Sea, Voyage to the Prehistoric Planet), and Jeff Morrow (Kronos, The Giant Claw) . Also appearing is Lance Fuller (The She-Creature), Robert Nichols (Giant), and Russell Johnson (Attack of the Crab Monsters), probably best known as `The Professor’, from the mid 1960s series “Gilligan’s Island”.

As the film begins we meet a scientist named Dr. Cal Meacham (Reason), preparing to leave Washington D.C. after attending a conference on atomic energy. Anyway, Cal borrows a jet to waft home (must be nice), and upon arriving, his plane conks out due to some showboating (nice play, Shakespeare), but Cal is saved as a mysterious force takes control and lands the vehicle safely, powerful to the amazement of Cal and his dopey assistant named Joe (Nichols), who I judge is supposed to provide a comedic element for the film, failing miserably I might add. But wait, there’s more…shortly after Cal’s return he receives a catalog featuring advanced electronic components related to assembling something called an `interocitor’, which turns out of be a care for, schmancy triangular television with some glowing unbelievable and far out capabilities (actually, it looks a bit like the drive-thru order box at a swiftly food restaurant, but that’s neither here nor there) . Once constructed, Cal receives a message from a melon headed, white haired nerdlinger type named Mr. Exeter (Morrow), who invites Cal to join a mysterious brain trust whose purpose appears to be development of recent forms of atomic energy. His curiosity piqued, Cal hops a plane (one which he isn’t piloting, thankfully), and ends up in a remote region somewhere in Georgia where he hooks up with Exeter (apparently he’s dropped the `Mr’ routine), Dr. Ruth Adams (Domergue), another scientist named Steve Carlson (Johnson), among others…eventually Cal learns Exeter is not of this Earth (well duh) and his motives for assembling Team Brainiac not as altruistic as originally stated, which leads to Cal and Ruth trying to flee, only to earn beamed aboard Exeter’s spacecraft (originate the probings), complete with swishy doors, and transported to Exeter’s home planet called Metaluna (once you advance Neptune, hang a fair and go about three billion miles, witness for the Stuckeys and you’re there) . As far as what happens next you’ll honest have to glance the film, but I will fraction this, there’s aliens, an objective to goodness flying saucer, ookie mutants with big brains and oversized claws with a penchant for pinching, killer remote-controlled meteors, some dude named The Monitor (sound ominous, doesn’t it? ), matte paintings of astonishing alien landscapes, and so on…

I really liked this film a lot…distinct, the acting leaves something to be desired (Rex Reason probably could have been replaced with a tree and few would have noticed), but there appeared to be a proper sense of ambition towards the presentation of the material. The main strength of this film is the special effects, which, in my concept, reach off ravishing well. Certainly compared to today’s standards they’ll seem hokey, but I’m betting when the film was originally released audiences were amazed and I’ll doubt few left the theater feeling like they didn’t secure their money’s worth. The bits I opinion really unique were how some of these so called scientists, at least the ones who didn’t have their minds `toyed’ with, at the Georgia facility seemed so tiresome on the uptake with regards to figuring out their host was an alien (I would have notion the ginormous cranium a uninteresting giveaway) . And then once they did figure it out, no one seemed that surprised or stunned. Honestly, had it been me being abducted and taken a bazillion miles into outer region, ending up on some alien planet I would have been seriously freaking out, but neither Cal nor Ruth really seemed all that upset. Perhaps scientists are made of sturdier stuff than us non-brainy types, of which I think myself one. As far as the characters there was some promising development early on, but it eventually broken-down as those introduced fell into homogenous roles (Reason the rugged, masculine hero type, Domergue the sparkling screaming mimi in misfortune, etc.) . Morrow’s character of Exeter did seem to have the most potential, in terms of his altering definite plans based on his developing an plan of humans after spending time with them, but this sort of petered out a bit, taking a backseat to the visual aspects point to in the film, which is a fairly accepted pitfall in the genre, especially in today’s films, in terms of flashy effects superseding the more expansive elements of the account. All in all you can certainly win plenty of fault with this feature, but I’d suggest viewing the film with a slightly less important contemplate, as not to miss all the fun.

The narrate, presented in fullscreen (1.33:1), does spy really helpful, despite areas that show some minor signs of age (there weren’t any frames missing, but there was some specking here and there) . As far as the Dolby Digital 2.0 mono audio, I notion it came through very well and had no complaints. There’s not mighty in the method of extras except for an novel theatrical trailer and subtitles in English, Spanish, and French. I was a miniature surprised at the lack of an audio commentary, especially since I’ve always considered this staple film in the classic science fiction genre, maybe not to the extent of those like The Day the Earth Stood Aloof (1951), The Thing from Another World (1951), or Forbidden Planet (1956), but one level-headed favorable of attention.

Incidentally, This Island Earth was given the Mystery Science Theater 3000 treatment, as it was the flick featured when the explain made the leap to the sizable conceal assist in 1996.

Clark Gable is my approved actor of all time, so the DVD boxed site, CLARK GABLE: THE SIGNATURE COLLECTION, from Warner Home Video is destined to be an often-played common. Gable made his first movie in 1931 and his last in 1961; this boxed spot goes from 1933-1953. Included are six movie treasures: DANCING LADY (1933), CHINA SEAS (1935), WIFE VS. SECRETARY and SAN FRANCISCO (both 1936), Pronounce TOWN (1940), and MOGAMBO (1953) .

DANCING LADY is a Joan Crawford vehicle, with a young Clark Gable and Franchot Tone as the men she chooses between. We are in the Depression era Manhattan note business world, with Gable as a play director and Tone a millionaire playboy financing the prove. Fred Astaire makes his film debut as himself, and Nelson Eddy and The Three Stooges have cameo roles. Bonuses are two Three Stooges shorts and a theatrical trailer.

CHINA SEAS is a “guilty pleasure” for director Tay Garnett. Gable plays a ship captain who does not know that his Hong Kong-to-Singapore voyage includes a gold shipment and Chinese coolies. The dream supporting cast includes Jean Harlow and Wallace Beery (re-united from DINNER AT EIGHT), a young Rosalind Russell, C. Aubrey Smith, and Lewis Stone. Bonuses are a color travelogue, a musical short, and a theatrical trailer.

Clarence Brown’s WIFE VS. SECRETARY has Clark Gable married to Myrna Loy and boss to Jean Harlow. In a heavenly movie, each woman respects the other. This is at least the fourth movie that Gable and Harlow made together; they were very accepted. A young James Stewart plays Harlow’s boyfriend and fifty years later calm fondly remembered a passionate kiss they shared. Large bonuses here are a musical short, a theatrical trailer, and an Oscar-winning “Crime Does Not Pay” short.

An all-time approved of mine, SAN FRANCISCO has been remastered to do its incomparable 1906 earthquake climax really something. But even without the bravura climax, we quiet have Barbary Glide joint owner Gable competing with wealthy uptown Jack Holt for Jeanette MacDonald as a singer. As a generic priest, Spencer Tracy got the Oscar nomination that should have gone to Gable’s memorable Blackie Norton. The finale gives me goosebumps; curiously, one of the bonuses is an even more effective alternate ending. Other bonuses on this masterpiece are two Techicolor travelogues of the 1939 Adore Island World’s Glorious, and a 45 small TNT documentary on Gable’s career and life. The first night you do this boxed space, begin with this documentary as an overview.

Another “guilty pleasure”, Protest TOWN has a cast to die for–Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy again, this time as oil wildcatters, and Claudette Colbert and Hedy Lamarr as their women. The supporting cast of this Jack Conway-directed gem includes Frank Morgan, Lionel Atwill, and Chill Wills. Bonuses are a color cartoon, a B&W documentary short, and a theatrical trailer.

John Lee Mahin was one of Clark Gable’s common screenwriters. Mahin wrote Snarl TOWN, eight years earlier wrote RED DUST (1932), and in 1953 did MOGAMBO, the Technicolor remake of RED DUST. I like RED DUST more because of Jean Harlow, but Gable is wonderfully cast as a astronomical game hunter in Africa in John Ford’s MOGAMBO. Filmed on position with dazzling color, this is a cherish triangle between Broadway showgirl Ava Gardner (in the Harlow role) and married Grace Kelly (in the Mary Astor role) . Romance and adventure blend superbly in a superbly cast movie. The notorious cinematographers are Robert Surtees and David Lean’s Freddie Young. The sole bonus here is a theatrical trailer.

I know, where are GONE WITH THE WIND and MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY? GWTW is literally its contain boxed spot now, and I added BOUNTY from musty videocassette. It is the greatest sea adventure of all time, impeccable cast, and superbly edited by Margaret Booth; I recommend it highly. As for IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT one year earlier, putrid studio. I don’t beget Warner Home Video has access to Columbia releases. But picky, picky! You acquire six astonishing Clark Gable movie gems with a lot of bonuses, and you smooth notice more. Then go rent or retract BOUNTY and NIGHT! And THE MISFITS (1961), for that matter. And also pick the recent 4-disk GWTW. Warners’ CLARK GABLE: THE SIGNATURE COLLECTION is impeccable and gets my highest DVD boxed station rating.

For fans of ‘The King of Hollywood’ this dwelling will no doubt seem diagram overdue. The titles chosen for this collection vary in appropriateness for inclusion, the comedy ‘Wife Vs. Secretary’ is only a so-so film that is made worthwhile only by the quality of the cast ie Gable, Myrna Loy and Jean Harlow. Also with the long-lost Harlow, Gable stars in the sillier than droll ‘China Seas’ in which he plays a ship’s captain.

Mogambo is a universally appreciated 1953 remake of an earlier Gable film (this time with Ava Gardner and Grace Kelly) in which he reprises his unique role. A immense improvement of the unique.

Dancing Lady is an underrated 1933 comedy classic with Joan Crawford in a change of stride comedic turn that she pulls off marvellously. When Gable slaps her butt after granting her a favour and she wistfully thanks him; priceless!

All in all this a status of classics that should please Gable’s fans and those who fair delight in mountainous vintage entertainment alike.

When I saw that the CRITERION COLLECTION was bringing THE BLOB to DVD – I have to admit I was fearful. This effective and classy shrimp 1950’s monster flick was getting the kind of star treatment that most films released on DVD are begging for. And for pleasurable reason… THE BLOB is an friendly movie. It hits all the marks, it stands it grounds, it never bores you and it provides you with a modern (and even credible) monster that to this day is peaceful more injurious than most that putrid the shroud (and yet remains the most fun – really, if gum chewed encourage, it would survey like the BLOB) . CRITERION again shines here… period style box art (including in the lower left corner a warning that the producers of THE BLOB can not be held libal for heart attacks or faninting from watching the film), a fact based booklet featuring the orginal poster art from the release for it’s shroud, plus a half sheet poster of the box art that is high quality and all glossy… a fine touch. The disc features an marvelous transfer of the film. The colors are crisp and the sound is detached effective and well balanced. Two audio commentaries are included with the disc, and each are insightful and animated. Both remain stunning considerable cover specific, but do branch out from time to time to justify a host of inside details (like why McQueen wished had had taken a percentage of THE BLOB, and how the leading lady wasn’t cast until the very last second… which was the very first day of shooting) . Trailer is included, as well as what is really a ample addition… a photo collection of slack the scene stills, effects (even what the accurate BLOB looked like off camera and unbiased how astronomical it really was… small hint: not very), and rare BLOB props and BLOB memorabilia – overall CRITERION has given us yet another must have for DVD owners. If you’re a fan of the period and the genre, then THE BLOB is a must, I can not recommend it enough… it’s pure fun. And if you know someone this holiday season that is getting a DVD and into 50’s shockers… initiate them off correct and purchase up the BLOB.

Those expecting a pristine copy of this 1958 sci-fi classic should notice out Criterion’s DVD (which Amazon also carries) rather than this no-frills budget version. For serious fans of “The Blob,” the Criterion version is the only contrivance to go and includes two separate audio commentaries from producer Jack Harris and director Irvin Yeaworth, among others. Also included is a photo stills gallery of collector Wes Shank’s Blob collection, including the celebrated red silicone masquerading as a man-eating monster from outer site.

For casual fans of the film, however, this version (from Beverly Wilshire Filmworks, distributed by Front Row Video) is serviceable enough with VHS-like viewing quality. The source material isn’t unpleasant, but is certainly nowhere arrive as crisp and desirable looking (and sounding) as the Criterion version. It is the full-length version, however, and is presented in pudgy veil (pan & scan) . But that’s all you secure, there are no extras to be had, not even chapter breaks. You honest lag the disc into your DVD player and it plays automatically.

Residents of Chester County, Pennsylvania (west of Philadelphia) may discover a few of the film’s locations including the Colonial Theater in Phoenixville and the Downingtown Diner, both of which are featured prominently in the film’s climax. These cinematic “landmarks” are calm in existence today, well over 40 years after the film was made.
